A wireless ad hoc network is a decentralized type of wireless network that does not rely on a pre existing infrastructure such as a router in wired networks or access point instead each node participates in routing by forwarding data for other nodes so basically a wireless ad hoc network refers to a network where all devices have equal status on a network and are free to associate with any other ad hoc network device in link range, it uses the principle of peer to peer networking within a short distance
A wireless ad hoc network allows you to share files from your computer to other devices and also allows you to share internet from your computer to other devices. in this post I'm going to walk you through on how to set this type of network. In order to share internet the host computer should have a wired/wireless internet connection or an internet from a modem
To create this network your network adapters' driver should be supportive with an updated driver otherwise this connection might not be able to be created
Using windows 7
To set up a wireless ad hoc network follow the following few clicks on your computer
- Go to the start button
- Click control panel
- Select view network status and tasks
- Click setup a new connection or network
- Select setup a wireless ad hoc network
- Click next
- When prompted provide the name of your network and the password
Using window 8
Windows 8 missing the start button is not the only features distinguishing it from windows 7, creating a wireless ad hock network is a little complicated compared to windows 7, In windows 8 we have to create this network using command prompt
- Open command prompt with administrator prevalenges
- To check if the network adapter supports this type this command then press enter
Observe to see if hosted network supported : yes then you are good to go
- Type netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=type the name of your network key=type your password
- Type netsh wlan start hostednetwork
- Under control panel select network and sharing
- Click properties
- On the window that pops up go to the sharing tab
- Enable internet sharing and select ad hoc network in home networking connection
